Matusow lost about half of his stack on
hand No. 2 Friday, when his three kings lost to production
assistant Scott Lazar's ace-high flush, which he made with
four community cards showing on the board.
Less than two hours later, Matusow had pocket 10s
vs. mortgage banker Steven Dannenmann, who had an ace and
jack. The board (community cards) were 5-3-2-4-9, giving
Dannenmann a straight, eliminating Matusow, who picked up
a check for $1 million to play poker
online. Filling
out the rest of the table: Dannenmann ($5.8 million);
Joseph Hachem ($6.3 million); Daniel Bergsdorf ($4.5
million) and Scott Lazar ($6.7 million). Every man who
began the day at the table was guaranteed at least $1
million in the 36th annual no-limit Texas Hold ’em
tournament. The winner, who probably was crowned in the
wee hours earlier this morning, would win about $7.5
million. Friday’s final group of nine emerged from a field
of 5,619 gamblers. They had survived eight days of
mind-numbing poker.
Poker requires stamina, but no real
physical strength -- just like table tennis. It requires
no speed -- like weightlifting.
But if you think poker isn't a physical activity, you've
never tried to put on a poker face, preventing your eyes,
mouth, legs and hands from showing what your brain is
thinking. And go check out the workout routines of some of
the best pros.
You don't have to run a marathon to see that poker is a
sport. Just sit down for a tournament, and explain how
that adrenaline rush of competition isn't sporting.
Pretend you aren't exhausted after a few hours of playing,
more tired than you might be after standing in the
outfield for three hours and swinging a bat four times.
The 26-year-old, who has won more than
$4 million on the tour, was in his first semester at Cal
State Northridge when he began playing poker online in the
student union between classes. He almost always dominated
the players, who included his economics professor. One
evening at the Hustler Casino in Gardena, Le staked his
student loans and financial aid. He lost big time. But he
quit school and kept on playing, sometimes as much as 70
hours a week. |
