There are several stories about its invention in the air. But their authenticity is doubtful bcoz of lack of evidences. Few people say that the game was invented in China and brought to Europe by traders who were trading with the Chinese. Where as some people say that Blaise Pascal first introduced a primitive version of roulette in the 17th century. Roulette in French language means "small wheel". So, it might be the case that it was first originated in France.

But, all stories aside, the next known fact is that several early versions of a wheel and spinning ball were invented in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. It is said that this was a by-product of his perpetual motion devices. In the late years of the 18th century a game that we could recognize as modern Roulette was introduced in Parisian casinos. Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc invented the single "0" roulette game in 1842. Because gambling was illegal in France during this time, the game was introduced in Hamburg, Germany where it became very popular and replaced an earlier version that featured higher odds. Then this game was also banned in Germany. At a later date, Francois and his son Camille were responsible for bringing the game of roulette back to southern France for the Prince of Monaco, Charles III. As a result, the lavish, world-famous resort of Monte Carlo was developed.
